Brewmaster and Co-founder Larry Goldstein was born and raised on Long Island, but after getting his biology degree at SUNY Stony Brook he headed to Atlanta, Georgia to study Chiropractic. It was during this time that he discovered his love and passion for craft beer. He traveled the country visiting breweries, hosting beer tastings, home brewing his own beer and entering and judging beer competitions. Larry wrote articles and a tasting column for the Southern Brew News as well amassing notebooks of over 5,000 individual beer reviews. Things changed however when he began assistant brewing at a local brewpub. After more than a decade of running his chiropractic practice, he moved back to his hometown of Nesconset, NY with his wife and four daughters.
Now back on Long Island he attended the American Brewers Guild to obtain a more formal brewing education. This was followed by an apprenticeship at The Lost Abbey/Port Brewing with Tomme Arthur in San Diego. The West Coast style IPAs, with the in-your-face hops, big imperial styles and sour/wild ales inspired him. These flavors have been carried over to Spider Bite and can be seen in their beers.
The idea and name, Spider Bite Beer Company, was conceived back in 2008, along with co-founder and friend Anthony LiCausi, after a summer of too many bug bites. During the past year Spider Bite has released a number of beer from the pale ale family, stouts, saisons, and a very well received Wee Heavy. In their first year of business, Robert’s Spider Wee Heavy, coupled with their Eight Legged RyePA and Boris the Spider Russian Imperial Stout, earned them the 2012 FX Matt Memorial Cup for “Best Craft Brewery” in NY State.
